Becoming an Architect in Maryland

What is required to become a licensed architect in Maryland? The Maryland Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing is the governing body that regulates new architects entering the state. They provide at set of procedures that must be followed to obtain a license. The state of Maryland has also adopted the framework of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), which is an authoritative body that sets acceptable standards for architectural quality.

 

Accredited College Degree. To practice architecture in Maryland, you must earn a college degree that meets the standards of the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). In Maryland, there are currently two colleges that have received the appropriate accreditation, which includes Morgan State University and the University of Maryland. If you intend on completing your studies in this state, you must complete your degree through one of these institutes. There are three basic routes you can follow to pursue a compatible education. (1) Obtain a Bachelor of Architecture with a minimum total of 150 semester hours. (2) Obtain a Masters of Architecture with at least 30 semester hours beyond your undergraduate coursework. (3) Obtain a Doctor of Architecture with at least 90 semester hours beyond undergraduate coursework.

 

Internship. The second major accomplishment for the budding architect is to complete the Internship Development Program, or IDP. You will be placed under supervision by an approved and licensed architecture firm, which will allow you to experience the job first hand. The goal is that you obtain the experience necessary to make sound choices when you enter the field independently. In addition, IDP allows you to make connections and network with potential employers for the future.

 

Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®). The final major step in the process is to pass the Architect Registration Examination. The exam itself encompasses the entire scope of the profession and is broken down into seven parts. Students will typically start studying months in advance to ensure they are fully prepared to sit for the exam. Although the exam is considered extremely difficult, you should have plenty of resources available on your college campus to help you prepare.
