The Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners is responsible for implementing the license requirements for professional architects. The state uses the framework set by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Working together, these two governing bodies are responsible to ensuring the quality of practicing architects in Tennessee.

College Education. The first major step towards a career in architecture is to obtain a quality college degree. Tennessee requires that you obtain a degree that has been certified by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the University of Memphis offer compatible degrees in the field. You must seek enrollment at one of these institutes if you plan on obtaining your degree in state. As outlined by NCARB, you can choose any of the following degree types to become licensed. (1) Obtain a Bachelor of Architecture with a minimum total of 150 semester hours. (2) Obtain a Masters of Architecture with at least 30 semester hours beyond your undergraduate coursework. (3) Obtain a Doctor of Architecture with at least 90 semester hours beyond undergraduate coursework.

Internship. The second major step is to participate in an unpaid internship. Students must work at the internship level before becoming a licensed architect, which is known as the Intern Development Program (IDP). As an intern, you will have the ability to master your skills under the supervision of experienced professionals. You will also have the valuable opportunity meet established professionals in your area who can help you find employment after you graduate.

Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®). The last step in the career progression is to pass the Architect Registration Examination. This comprehensive seven-part exam is designed to test the architect for a firm understanding of all professional and technical standards within the field. This test covers a wide range of topics and often takes years of schooling to pass successfully. You will find many resources on your college campus that will help you prepare before you sit for the actual exam.
