The DC Board of Architecture and Interior Designers is the governing body that handles the issuance of an architecture license. If you plan on becoming licensed in D.C., you will need to follow the processes and procedures set by this agency. The District of Columbia follows every core requirements set by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
Accredited College Degree. To start on the path to a career in architecture, one must obtain a degree that has the approval of the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The District of Columbia has 2 universities within its borders that offer NAAB accredited degree programs, including Howard University and the Catholic University of America. You may attend a program that meets the following requirements at either of these institutes.(1) Obtain a Bachelor of Architecture with a minimum total of 150 semester hours. (2) Obtain a Masters of Architecture with at least 30 semester hours beyond your undergraduate coursework. (3) Obtain a Doctor of Architecture with at least 90 semester hours beyond undergraduate coursework.
Internship. The second major step is to be accepted into the Intern Development Program (IDP). This program has been designed to create a live environment in which a student architect can gain valuable experience. This step is considered vital and you must show proof of completion before you can become a licensed architect. As you progress through your education, you will likely encounter many opportunities to enter the IDP program. Once you’ve logged enough hours, the certificate of completion will be presented to the approving authorities in the District of Columbia.
Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®). After you have graduated from an accredited college and experienced the IDP program, you will be eligible to take the ARE exam. The test is broken down into seven unique parts that cover topics ranging from structural integrity principles to ethical standards. The test is comprehensive and will encompass your entire education. Many students will spend countless hours preparing for the exam in the months prior to the test.
